NaBloPoMo Day 4: A new day, a new president

November 4, 2008

This post will follow my recent brain patterns.  Erratic.   Bear with me.

I’ve been inspired by some fellow bloggers lately.  There are some amazing women out there, women I have never met, but they have made a positive influence on me.

Bethany Actually posted recently of her experience at her local pottery painting studio.  There was a mom who was being less than patient with her uncooperative small children and was raising her voice at them.  Bethany took it upon herself to pray for the mom and the children, and all of a sudden peace settled on the studio.  God is good.

This affected me in two ways.  One, because prayer needs to be a bigger part of my life, and something I turn to more often than not.  And two, I need to be more patient and talk a little kinder to my children.  Patience is not exactly my best quality.  I can often lost it a little too quickly.  I do not yell at my children in public, because I can’t think of anything more belittling or humiliating for a child, but I do raise my voice a little too often at home.

I’ve been doing my best to curb this lately.  I’ve been talking very quietly to Liliana when she’s misbehaving, and amazingly, it has way more of an effect (affect?) than raising my voice.  Maybe it’s because she’s straining to hear me, but she usually listens right away.  Key word: usually.

Amanda (aka Kickyboots), who recently gave birth to her second beautiful daughter, has started Weight Watchers again.  As I wrote back in June, I did Weight Watchers earlier this year and did alright at it.  Not as well as I’d hoped, but it was something.  Reading of Amanda’s journey beginning inspired me to start up again.  I haven’t gained back the weight that I lost, but I also didn’t reach my goal the first time.  I know that it’ll be hard over Christmas, what with all the Christmas baking and turkey dinner and leftovers, but I’m going to do my best.  I know one guy that would appreciate it if I succeeded at my goal.  (Hi Noah!)

The next one is not so much inspiring, I guess, but very thought provoking.  Angella (aka Dutch Blitz), a fellow NaBloPoMo participant and one of my favorite bloggers, is putting a little “A year ago today” link at the bottom of all her November (NaBloPoMo) posts.  I can’t remember what I did five minutes ago, much less a year ago.  But that’s the great thing about blogging!  I can go and check!

A year ago today, I witnessed the vows of my college roommate and her now-husband.  Two years ago today, I had just gotten my former camera back from the camera doctor quicker than I’d expected.  I do not have a post for three years ago today (since I was blogging on MySpace and decided to delete my account, blog and all, genius), but I know exactly what I was doing.  Wedding planning!

It’s so neat looking back exactly a year, or exactly two years, and seeing how the kids have grown, or how differently I write or post.  If you blog, I encourage you to do the same and see how far you’ve come.

On to the last part of this erratic post.  The US election.  Are you sick of it yet?  I find it intriguing.  At this moment, according to CNN.com, Obama has 174 electoral votes and McCain has 64.  Seems like a lost cause (much to my chagrin), but the interesting thing is, that the individual votes are almost even; Obama with 12,506,490 and McCain with 12,407,355.  And counting.  Pretty much even.  It’s kind of weird that the American people are pretty much split 50/50, but the presidency goes to the one with the most electoral votes, not the most individual votes.  If I’m understanding this wrong, correct me, but that’s what I understand of it and it just seems weird.

On a funny note, CNN hologrammed Jessica Yellin into the CNN centre earlier.  She even called herself Princess Lea.  Star Wars much?  I was giggling through the entire interview.  I’m mature like that.

I’m sure that I’ll stay up late enough to find out who the next president of the United States is, but I think it’s kind of pointless to assume that, at this point, anyone but Barack Obama will get the title.  He’s not who I would have picked, but hey, I’m not American.  I guess I shouldn’t be so quick to speak, though, since now McCain’s electoral votes are climbing fast.

Either way, there will soon be a new president, and the American people will be looking to their new leader to fix the mistakes made by the previous president.  This may be a long shot, but Go McCain!

  1. I have also been very inspired lately by blogging women, thank you for sharing :)
I have a funny little story of how prayer changed my husbands mind on a certain subject but I shall leave it at that.

  2. I am getting really frustrated that so much attention is being paid to the American election, when so little was paid to our own. I find it a little terrible-less than 60% of our eligible voters turned up!
That being said, I AM paying attention to the results down south (and a little up north). I had to look on Wikipedia to figure out how their voting system works!

  3. All I have been hearing today is election stuff - I will likely stay up too :)

Amanda was over this afternoon - she’s a great inspiration for WW!

  4. I liked the Bethany story. Go God! Also, I’m so tired of the US Election. I feel like it’s all I hear about in the media. Well, I know, it is election day and all… but Hello? We only had something like 60% turnout for our OWN flipping election. What’s the deal? Where was all this interest when we were deciding the fate of our own country.

  5. I don’t vote unless I’m insired by a candidate and if I was American Barack would have inspired me enough to vote. He is a role model of mine actually. What a waste of money our election was. Meanwhile there are starving children. Lovely.
