Close call
We had some friends over for dinner. All was well. We were sitting there chatting as the big kids screamed in the basement.
All of a sudden, Liliana starts choking. Noah is holding her and cannot figure out why she is arching her back, but he cannot see her face. I yell at him, “SHE’S CHOKING!” She can’t breathe. I’m freaking out. I grab her away from Noah and give her to Janna, who just happens to be a nurse.
She knows what to do. Liliana suddenly starts spewing spit up out her mouth and nose and starts to cry in a very labored kind of way. I’m scared and wondering why her cry sounds so funny. I’m just glad she’s crying.
We rarely have people over. This choking happened when we not only had people over, but one of those people was a nurse. God’s timing is perfect and I am so thankful for that.
Apparently Liliana’s cry sounded so hoarse and weird because she inhaled a bit of the spit up. Janna later told us that if she had not been able to breathe, she would have passed out and her airway would have relaxed and she’d have been able to breathe. As it is, Lili’s airway was opened before she could pass out. We were told that she just needed to cough a bit to get the spit up out of her lungs.
For the next couple hours, Liliana had slime running out of every orifice on her face. I didn’t mind wiping it one bit (although she minded) because she’s okay. She’s fine. No harm done.
Except a couple really shaken up parents.

very very very scary, we have had a close call before, and its not fun at all!!! glad everything is ok :)
Yikes :-/ I’m glad she’s okay!
You two stay up too late! Hee hee … the pot calling the kettle black … it’s 1:05 am.
Jen, that’s scary! David, who is certified to teach, just taught all of us cpr, which covers choking, etc. - a course well worth taking for anyone, as choking happens to the young and old - new for Kevin and a great refresher for Bob and I as we both took a course years ago - would be beneficial if you are looking to open a daycare - I’m sure they would have one in Terrace through the hospital or heart/stroke society (just a suggestion)
How terrifying!!
Thank God she is okay, and like you said your nurse friend was there!
Marin choked once on a piece of cheese, she ended up okay too but in the end we were both crying. SO SCARY!
Joanne - Thanks for the suggestion! I’m going to look into that right away.
Been there done that a few times. Scariest thing ever. It was a blessing that your friend was there. Glad she was okay :)
Oh my gosh. That’s scary. I’ve always worried about choking, but fortunately Aaron has never made us deal with that. Yikes. Glad everything is ok.
Ohh, scary. Glad she’s ok.
And p.s. I love all your Etsy shop stuff, I just wish I knew if I was having a boy or a girl!
That’s so scary!!
I’m so glad she’s OK!
So scary! That is my worst fear! So was she choking on an actual object or her spit up?
Christy - I’m not quite sure. She didn’t have anything in her mouth and was not eating anything so I’m assuming it was her spit up.
Teresa - when you have your little baby - I’ll make you whatever you want for your baby gift!!
Wow, what a feeling of lack of control over a situation, hey? We had a similar thing happen with Joel when he was young but I had given him a lifesaver. When he was choking, he could get the tiniest bit of air through the hole in the candy but was turning a little purplish. And all I could do is watch, and hope his body did what it was supposed to do. After an eternity of him trying to scream the candy flew out of his mouth and his the fridge. I cried for a long time after that and held him tight and didn’t give him hard candies for quite a while. So scary and not a great memory to reminise in my mind about actually. God bless you and your family. I am so glad Liliana was safe in God’s hands, and that He timed it just right.
