moments
I got a call from Liliana’s school on the way to Kaylie’s school this morning (yes, RUSSELL, I pulled over) saying that Liliana’s school was closed today due to a water main break. Liliana was disappointed, I was not. One less time I have to leave the house! Yay! As we sit on the couch — me catching up on blogs, her watching Little Einsteins — she asks me about twenty questions in a row and my head starts to spin and I remember why Monday mornings are usually so peaceful. I love having her home, but sometimes I’m a little more dizzy when she’s around. Also, WHAT THE HECK DID THEY DO TO SESAME STREET? Where’s Snuffleupagus?

There was the most incredible sunrise this morning. I will never, ever tire of Saskatchewan sunrises. This morning it looked like the sky was on fire — pink fire. At one point on my morning commute, the tallest city buildings were framed perfectly in the middle of the brightest part of the sunrise, as we viewed it from across a large field. I could sit there all morning and watch, although I’d be freezing cold and I’d probably get some weird looks as I sit there in my lawn chair in the middle of winter.

Noah had a super-awesome day yesterday for three very important (to him)(and therefore to the rest of us) reasons: (1) he’s part of fantasy hockey league (that he runs) and he is winning this week by quite a bit, (2) his Penguins won, and (3) his Patriots won and are on their way to the Super Bowl. He didn’t think that all three things could happen in one awesome day, but they did.
That last item is good news and bad news. It’s good news because the Patriots are in the Super Bowl, but it’s bad news because it’s a repeat of the 2008 Super Bowl in which the Patriots played the Giants and lost. And Noah had to watch them lose in front of a dozen of his man friends. He didn’t cry. On the outside. He’s going to his parents’ place to watch the Big Game, and I’m glad that he’ll have his mom around to celebrate with or to console him. (I’m not known for my sports sympathy.)(Although I will be watching the game.)(With ladies and babies.)
Also, I got some footage of Noah watching yesterday’s game and it is comedy GOLD. (Yes, Eric, I am sending it to you.)

I read this post from Ali this morning and I laughed out loud. She wrote about being a blogger with non-blogger friends and it is rad.

Miss Liliana has a really hard life. I was talking to my mom the other day and asked Liliana if she’d like to talk to Grannie. “Yea, then I can tell her about my bad life.” Bad things always happen to Liliana, like that time that Kaylie had Silly Putty (Silly Pudding, according to Liliana) and Liliana didn’t, or that time when she had to get dressed AND have breakfast and that was just too many things to do, or that time that Kaylie had the Lego ladder first and that JUST WASN’T FAIR, or when her beautiful artwork has to be removed from her wall, or when Kaylie asked for a foot-long Subway sandwich and Liliana flipped out because she didn’t want a foot sandwich, she wanted a peanut butter sandwich.
And sometimes she just likes to double-check things. “No one ever takes my brains away, right Mama?”

I added a 2012 Book List page up top there because one of my 2012 resolutions is to read 52 books, one for each week of the year. At this moment, I’m on Book Four and it’s the fourth week of January, so that’s good, right? I’d love some recommendations, though. I don’t think I read a single book last year and that is just not right. I’m reading the Harry Potter series right now, but what should I read next? What is your favorite book? What book do you think is a must-read?
Now I just need to pay off my library fines and I’m good to go.

Re being surrounded by non-blogging people: Dad had a new laptop and sent his first email from the new machine to my brother with the subject “First”. John checked his email on his iPhone and there was Dad claiming “First” at the top of his inbox. We nearly died laughing at his unwitting “trollery” and had absolutely no-one else around who would have understood why it was so funny.
OH gosh! I could gush about books for HOURS! I might just have to mail a couple to you :P I just finished reading Clockwork Prince (Book 2 of the Infernal Devices series) and I’m very sad that the next one doesn’t come out for another year :(
Is any genre good for you?
OH MY.
That little jersey and jeans bum just killed me dead.
I’ve heard the Hunger Games series is good and The Help
So, I read a lot of juvenile fiction for fun. Also it helps me pick out books that would be good for my class. Rick Riordan wrote some really good books that are exciting: The Percy Jackson Series (The Lightning Thief, The Battle of the Labyrinth, The Last Olympian, The Sea of Monsters, The Titans Curse), The Kane Chronicles (The REd Pyramid, The Throne of Fire) and the Heroes of Olympus (Lost Hero and Son of Neptune). They are all great reads and quick. Also Jodi Picoult is a good author, my sister loves her. The Help is a good book too.
The Mortal Instruments series. First book is City of Bones!! I’m just on the second…City of Ashes!! The main characters are “shadowhunters”, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Mix that with a few werewolves and sexy vampires!! Yummmooo!!
Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series (First book is called Cross-Stitch in England, not sure if it is Outlander or Cross Stitch in Canada) You might not be able to read them in a week though, not because they aren’t good, but because they are HUGE! Each one is like 800ish pages long and there are 7 and counting. Still recommend them to everyone.
The Hunger Game Series – I went through all three of those books in less than a week. AMAZING!
Preston in his jersey makes me think i must get one for my little guy for next season. I love your 52 book challenge. Sigh, I miss reading. The only books i read for fun in 2011 that weren’t grad school textbooks were The Hunger Games – read all 3 in a weekend. Highly recommend them!
Hunger Games,
The Help
The Happiness Project
Book of Negroes
Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series (grim, very grim)
Outlander series
Wendy Mass books (great young adult lit)
Warhorse
the Good Earth
Memoirs of a Geisha
The Princess Bride (the book is as amazing as the movie)
I could go on and on and on!
You don’t know me. I’m Jessica’s sis-in-law. I stalk around here sometimes because I enjoy how you write. And I especially enjoy Liliana’s adventures. I have a 4 year old boy. I think they would get along. :)
Books. What a great goal. 52 in a year. I also recommend The Help and The Book of Negroes. If you need some semi-meaningful fluff in some of those weeks (I couldn’t do deep, gut-wrenching books every week) I say check out a Jodi Picoult book or two. I just read House Rules about a boy with Asperger’s Syndrome. My Sister’s Keeper was a good read and much better than the movie. Plain Truth is another Picoult book that is good. These are not fabulous pieces of literature that will live for the ages. They are well written stories with some drama and enough researched facts to make you think…just a little bit. Like I said, a little fluff.
Good luck with your goal! Have fun reading. Keep writing. I’ll check in again sometime soon:)
I am reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close…. I want to read the book before I see the movie. So far so good!
I love your update posts. And your kids. Can’t wait to finally meet P-Dawg this summer!
Books:
Hunger Games Trilogy
The Forgotten Garden is my favorite Kate Mortensen book, but all three are good
Room
The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo SLOW start in the first book – it took me three tries – but it gets better
Gargoyle
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (reading right now)
Don’t forget to use the Overdrive app! :)
Ha! I was going to suggest Attachments but it’s already on there. :-) Have you ever read any Bill Bryson? He’s HILARIOUS. He’s written quite a few travel books, and a couple of books about the English language (that are quite fascinating and funny, really) and one that’s a little bit about everything, and one about hiking the Appalachian Trail. Pretty much all of his books are my favorite book ever. And you shouldn’t read anything of his in public on account of how you will laugh like a loon and people will look at you funny.
