Ode to my Family: My Sister

Other Odes:

My brother, Nick

My brother, Brandon

Meet Erica.

Ode to Erica

Seventeen years and one month ago, I finally got the sister I’d been praying for since I found out my mom was pregnant again. I prayed every day that she would be a girl because I already had two brothers and wanted a little variety in my siblings.

I still remember the day she was born. My grandma was babysitting us, and the phone rang. Nick and I were outside, and we came running in when we heard the phone. My grandma answered it. Once she hung up, she told us that we had a new sister. I was STOKED!

When Erica was little, she was either in a swimming suit or a dress. All day every day. She definitely fit the role of “baby of the family”. With her, the Braam family was complete.

I totally love having a sister. Isn’t she cute?

If you look closely at her feet in the picture above, I’m pretty sure she’s wearing my aunt’s heels. The kid LOVED shoes at a very young age.

Now, Erica is active in Air Cadets and can play almost every instrument under the sun. She’s changed a lot in the last couple years, and has become very outgoing. I totally love the person she’s becoming. AND, she just got her full license, so stay off the sidewalks and out of the ditches.

I had the privilege of having her as my Maid of Honor at my wedding. She was totally gorgeous (as were my sisters-in-law) and I loved having her as a part of that special day.

Ode to Erica

Erica loves being an auntie, and was completely full of happiness when each of her nieces was born. When Kaylie was born, she was only 10. I have a great picture of her holding Kaylie when I was still in the hospital, but alas, I cannot find it.

When she found out that she was going to be an auntie for a third time, she was so excited that she immediately put it as her MSN status.

Erica, I’m so glad you’re my sister. I hope you have an amazing year in Grade 12, and I hope that you’re already saving up to come visit me. I love you!

I remember the day that Kaylie was born. It was the last day of Jr Girls camp at RABC, and Erica was eagerly awaiting the phone call all week telling her she was an auntie. When the phone call finally came, we were trying to get all the girls to get all their stuff towards the bus, and then we heard the phone ring and Erica, Tara and I ran towards the office! Erica had the biggest smile on her face! She was so excited to go home(one of the few campers that day!) and see Kaylie!
